Nostalgia: 90's Edition
Nostalgia, it all works in phases. We collectively just got off a big 1980's nostalgia trip which echoed throughout pop culture including fashion, music, movies, TV, and collectibles. The 2000's saw numerous shows and movies remade, re-purposed, and frankly destroyed by unoriginal hacks in the movie and TV industry (see: The Karate Kid, Knight Rider). People had on bright sunglasses and wore "crazy" patterns on their clothes. The 80's was back big time! Now it is 2013 and like all fads things must come to an end. The Gen X'ers who brought back the 80's are now being replaced by those pesky Gen Y kids and their thirst for all things 90's! Lets take a look at what is sparking some nostalgia for the decade that gave us Vanilla Ice and Tomagatchi pets.
Collectibles
The toy market for 90's stuff is growing. Toxic Crusaders, Street Sharks, Original Power Rangers/TMNT (but they never really went away), and anything else 90's is in high demand recently. Check any auction or collectible store and the facts are on the price tags. Vintage Power Rangers are climbing and don't even try and look for some Street Sharks MIB unless you just got paid a nice bonus. Here are a few lines I would like to see make a good comeback:
- Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
- Skeleton Warriors
- Mighty Max
- Street Sharks
Movies and TV
Hollywood is always the first to jump on a forgotten brand and capitalize, good or bad. Jurassic Park 4 is already in development and slated to be released in a year or two (it keeps changing). Remember Boy Meets World? Well it is back in the form of Girl Meets World focusing on the daughter of Cory and Topanga. That is just the beginning of what is to come. Give a year or two and there will be announcements of all sorts of 90's properties in TV/movie form. While we are on the subject of reboots here are my top choices for some movies and shows to get refreshers:
- TGIF Friday Nights. Just give me back a block of some feel good, family friendly shows and the audience will come.
- Excited for Jurassic Park, just don't screw it up. Use CGI sparingly.
- What happened to cartoon blocka on Saturday morning? Bring that back!
- Give Tim Allen a break and lets see Home Improvement get resurrected. Totally doable.
- I won't even go into Nickelodeon (then again they DID give us awesome turtles)...
Fashion
Brace yourselves for the incoming day glow and grunge resurgence. Neons and day glow have already been pushed into the mainstream once again, not so much for the guys but the ladies certainly have adopted the trend. Other things I have noticed are high-waist jeans (what?), fanny packs (yep), and denim in all forms.
What is to come!?
If this trend develops what else can we expect? I see a lot of people dusting off their ancient VHS players to revisit old gems, could we see the same for portable cassette players (get your mix tape on)? Will the bros at the gym start snapping up vintage Zubaz pants to show off as they do some gnarly curls? How about Macgyver getting a relaunch (Not Macgruber).
What I DON"T Want to Come Back
Some stuff needs to stay dead, like these:
- Grunge fashion, no and no. Some guys are not meant to have long hair.
- Beanie Babies, cute but that super-fad had its time.
- Celine Dion
